(from September 2024 Annals for Educators)
The subject of gender-based harassment and violence is a difficult one. It makes people uncomfortable. As such, important conversations rarely happen, but they must. The discomfort of breaking the silence is often when and where progress happens.
Use this to:
- Ask your residency program director for the recommended actions trainees should take if they encounter work-related harassment.
- What actions should the person the author reported this incident to have taken? In the absence of that person taking action, were there potential next steps the trainee might have taken? What were the barriers to taking those steps?
- Think about how sharing stories by those affected by workplace harassment helps to restore justice.
Annals for Educators is a Web Exclusives feature of Annals of Internal Medicine which includes activities using selected Annals articles to help medical educators in their teaching activities.
