Primary Care Takes on Opioid Addiction

From the October 2017 ACP Internist

Opioid use disorder kills hundreds of Americans each week, despite the availability of treatments that can cut mortality risk by more than half. With some education and empathy, however, internists can intervene to change this dynamic, according to experts.

ACP Internist provides news and information for internists about the practice of medicine and reports on the policies, products, and activities of ACP.

Hemorrhagic Conversion After Treatment of Deep-Vein Thrombosis in a Patient with Subacute Ischemic Stroke

Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) is an overlooked complication in patients with ischemic stroke and can be found in up to 80% of patients who did not receive prophylactic anticoagulation. Bleeding is the primary adverse effect of any anticoagulant therapy and although the risk of major bleeding is usually less than 3%, hemorrhagic conversion remains a real concern in these patients.

Medical Student Perspective

Leaving a Fingerprint in Medical School Through Teaching

It is 6 a.m. and the high-speed car race commences. I arrive at the university hospital, put on my white coat, and, depending on the rotation, visit my patients, do rounds with my preceptors, write progress notes, follow up labs, attend lectures, or study for exams. After 12 hours or so, I call it a day.

Rebecca Kruisselbrink, MD

Dr. Rebecca Kruisselbrink called a 150-acre farm in Tara, Ontario, home and personally identifies with the shortage of physicians that plagues rural regions. 鈥淚 grew up on a farm in a village with one stop light, and the nearest center with a small hospital was a 20-minute drive.鈥

Patterns of Sedentary Behavior and Mortality in U.S. Middle-Aged and Older Adults: A National Cohort Study

Although total sedentary time has been associated with increased mortality, most studies have relied on participant recall to report activity. Whether longer or shorter bouts of inactivity are associated with different outcomes is not known.
