Sahar J. Iqbal, MBBS, MSc, FRCPC, FACP, ACP Governor
Greetings from the Rock!
I want to start with the Memorial University land acknowledgement: "We acknowledge that the lands on which Memorial University's campuses are situated are in the traditional territories of diverse Indigenous groups, and we acknowledge with respect the diverse histories and cultures of the Beothuk, Mi'kmaq, Innu, and Inuit of this province."
I am profoundly honored and delighted to serve as your new chapter Governor. Amidst the hopes and aspirations of the post-covid era, together we will renew, rebuild, and re-engage to grow our chapter into a strong educational, academic, and research-oriented center of excellence. I want to nurture a spirit of camaraderie and cohesion within our ranks to help champion the causes of diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as a focus on physician wellness especially now as we recover from post-pandemic stress.
In continuing the tradition of annual scientific meetings, our planning committee is organizing the ACP Atlantic Chapter Annual Scientific Meeting held on November 1-2, 2024 in St. John's!
I have an enduring interest in preventative healthcare and nutrition medicine in the context of chronic disease management. Given the prevalence and incidence of diabetes and obesity in Atlantic Canada I think our approach to individual patient care and public healthcare should be innovative and multi-fold. Drawing from the Japanese concept of Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) and the Nordic concepts of Friluftsliv (free air living) in combination with social prescribing, we are well positioned in Atlantic Canada to harness the benefits of green and blue prescribing for diabetes and obesity which is the theme for this year's annual meeting.
Add to that the excitement and wonder of pharmaceutical advancement of therapy for diabetes and obesity in the shape of GLP-1RA and the dual and triple agonists with highly anticipated study results expected to be presented over the summer at the ADA and EASD makes for an exciting update to our understanding of managing these most menacing of chronic conditions.
Not only that, but the use of technology has also added another dimension to the care we provide to our patients with diabetes and obesity. Closed-loop hybrid systems and use of continuous glucose monitoring has transformed the way we approach patient care, and we have a session planned for the fall meeting.
This meeting promises to be both exciting and innovative, and I wholeheartedly invite everyone to join us this fall in beautiful St. John's! Given the geographic complexity of the Atlantic region, we have arranged video streaming venues in Halifax and Saint John.
Our 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting will be held in collaboration with the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine (CSIM) in Halifax October 15-18, 2025 – mark your calendars! We hope to be able to continue our collaborations with CSIM in the future.
To re-engage members, we are planning a quarterly journal club and information session with a focus on medical students, residents, and staff wellness. I encourage and invite you all to become more active and involved members of a growing and dynamic chapter – email me directly at sjiqbal@mun.ca
I extend my most sincere congratulations and thanks to our past-Governor Dr. Brian Moses for leading our chapter these last four years. My utmost thanks to all our board and committee members as well as Domenica Utano for all the support and help in moving along our shared goals and objectives.
And I thank you, our members, for all that you do for your patients, colleagues, and the advancement of Internal Medicine.
Warm wishes and a happy spring to you and your loved ones – here's to new beginnings!
